Webinar: Navigating Ethical Place-Based Research – Tools, Resources, and Reflections (28 October 2026)

The Navigating Ethical Place-Based Research thematic working group invite you to their webinar and the launch of the tool they created for SES researchers, the Reflexivity Booklet for Social-Ecological Researchers: Navigating Ethical Place-Based Research, on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. Register to attend the webinar here.

ℹ️ About the webinar: During this webinar, the Navigating Ethical Place-Based Research thematic working group will introduce themselves. They will discuss how the group came together, what it is about, the activities they have engaged in and the ones that they are preparing for, and share some of their recent outputs – such as their recent publication in Ocean and Society.

This webinar will also serve as the launch of the working group’s Reflexivity Booklet for Social-Ecological Researchers. The booklet is a reflexivity tool designed to guide place-based researchers as they navigate their own research journey. Through the booklet, the group invites SES researchers to consider their own positionality and other aspects of their research in relation to the place and context in which they work. The booklet is intended as a living document and its readers are invited to test it, engage with it, and share feedback that will inform future adaptations.

ℹ️ About the working group: The SocSES Navigating Ethical Place-Based Research thematic working group focuses on advancing ethical place-based research (PBR) in social-ecological systems (SES), particularly for Early Career Professionals (ECPs). While PBR is essential for tackling complex sustainability challenges through knowledge co-production and transdisciplinary approaches, it comes with challenges such as navigating unfamiliar contexts, avoiding extractive research practices, and building trust with local communities. The group explores what it means to conduct ethical, impactful, and culturally sensitive PBR, ensuring research supports local communities rather than imposing external solutions.

The working group consists of the following members: Ella-Kari Muhl, Willem Malherbe, Deborah Prado, Kinga Psiuk, Rafael Lembi, Lívia Cruz, Mia Strand, Lowine Hill, Maria Battaglia and Vítor Renck.
