Webinar: Farming for Transitions – Storytelling, tensions and everyday social innovations in the French Alps (6 October 2026)

The Nature-Based Transformations: Evolving Human-Nature Interactions under Changing Climate thematic working group and the Transformative Adaptation Research Alliance (TARA) invite you to their webinar on Tuesday, 6 October 2026 at 09:00 CEST.

ℹ️ About the webinar: Rural landscapes are central for sustainability transitions, yet they face multiple pressures from depopulation, agricultural intensification and abandonment, and competing policy agendas. Understanding how rural transitions unfold between these pressures and local initiatives is central to fostering more plural and sustainable pathways. Drawing on ethnographically oriented research in the Champsaur Valley in the French Alps, we explore how rural transitions are lived, negotiated and shaped on the ground. We examine both the structural tensions facing farmers, including land access, market dependence, policy constraints, and generational renewal, and the diverse strategies and social innovations through which rural actors respond to these challenges.

Combining insights from two complementary studies, we highlight the plurality of farming pathways that coexist within the same landscape. Through stories, experiences and everyday practices, we discuss how different visions of farming, livelihoods and rural futures emerge, interact, and sometimes conflict. We argue that rural transitions are contested and creative processes that are actively cultivated through relationships, care, cooperation and local innovation. As such we offer insights for debates and practices on rural development, multifunctional landscapes and more just and resilient rural futures.

ℹ️ About the speaker: Gonzalo Cortés-Capano is an environmental social scientist working at the intersection of environmental philosophy, human geography, biodiversity conservation and landscape studies. He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher in Philosophy at the University of Jyväskylä working on the ethics and politics of cohabitability. His research explores how landscape narratives, ethics, practices and governance shape plural pathways of socio-ecological transformations.
