This is the second of a series of training sessions that the Transformative Arts-Based Methods thematic working group is offering. The goal of these training sessions is to share examples of design and arts-based methods in SES research while reflecting on practices and lessons learned across contexts and projects.
In this instance, participants will be introduced to Photovoice, a popular arts-based research approach in the social-ecological systems research field. This method – which can take different shapes and forms – is particularly valuable in embracing a plurality of knowledge systems, holding complexity inherent in social-ecological systems, and challenging top-down and extractivist knowledge co-production processes. During the 60-minute session, participants will learn about the method and its conceptual framework, as well as engage in a brief hands-on trial.
The session will be led by several of the working group’s members: Mia Strand (NMU, South Africa), Lívia Cruz (ASU, USA and Brazil), Vanessa Masterson (SRC, Sweden and South Africa), and Mario Torralba (VU, Netherlands).
