Overview of Activities
The SES Society will offer a vibrant array of activities to foster collaboration, learning, and impact. These activities will be both driven by member-led thematic streams, and broader cross-cutting activities hosted by the SocSES coordination hub. These activities will include quarterly seminars featuring key voices in the SES field, early-career training programs, and opportunities to help shape the society’s governance and strategies through dedicated “task forces”. We’ll provide more information about these activities early in 2025.
A vibrant array of activities
Thematic streams will play a central role in driving the society’s activities, focusing on diverse topics of interest to social-ecological research and practice. Each stream will host a discussion forum, and will organize regular events, discussions, and collaborative projects.
Interested in leading or joining a thematic stream? Learn more and submit your proposal through our Call for Thematic Streams.
Core Activities
We envision a range of activities to form part of the society that will be initiated and grow over time as the society develops.

Knowledge leadership in advancing the SES based research and practice

Policy impact – as a society we will have an authoritative voice in policy and funder networks

Support for SES education more broadly such as the development of handbooks and websites

Educational activities such as short courses and summer schools, also focussed on non-traditional spaces (eg. with practioners, businesses).

Mainstream ses thinking through popular and social media

Support collaborations
through working group activities and collaborative projects

Networking opportunities including conferences, discussion fora, and working groups

Advocate for funding and recognition of social ecological systems research

Provide publishing opportunities by partnering with or in time potentially developing new high impact, open access journals that offer quality and engaged peer reviews

Support for existing networks particularly as a long term home, and facilitating funding options and opportunities, given the precarious funding situation for many of the current SES-focussed networks, coordination offices and functions.
