Hello wonderful colleagues!
A friendly reminder to any member to feel free to start a discussion thread if you wish! With that in mind, I’d love to start a conversation about ways to build community in the SocSES EC Hub.
What kinds of activities might you like to co-organize with others in the hub?

Hello! I’m a PhD student from UC Davis in California, USA. Is anyone planning to attend the Society of Ethnobiology conference in Sewanee, Tennessee in May 2026? I would love to meet up if so! Link if anyone is interested: https://ethnobiology.org/conference/upcoming/about

Hello Beautiful Community!
I’m organizing an event on reinvention that I’ll be hosting next Wednesday, and I would love to see you there. This will be an introductory session to reinvention as a practice, and it may serve as the opening to further collaborations and events to come.
Below, you’ll find more information about the event:
Title: Reinvention as a Practice: Navigating Change in an Era of Polycrisis
Date: Wednesday, 11th February, 2026 at 10 am EST
Zoom link: https://mcgill.zoom.us/meeting/register/oH_lKtQjTjSUXA8Mn2qiVQ
Organized by: Nadia Moukanni, PhD. Reinvention Canada
Description:
We are living in an era of polycrisis, a reality that cannot be addressed with the same ways of thinking that created it, echoing Einstein’s famous dictum. This moment calls for a profound shift in our mindsets, skillsets, and toolsets, particularly as disruption becomes the new normal rather than the exception.
If we can’t avoid disruption, the critical question becomes: how do we respond to it? Our responses can either reproduce familiar patterns and results or open space for new, emergent ways of thinking, acting, and working together.
Reinvention is not a foreign concept; it is deeply embedded in nature itself. Natural systems continuously reset, adapt, and renew—reinvention is part of the rhythm of life. In this sense, reinvention is not about reacting, but about cultivating the capacity to anticipate, design, and implement change in a more proactive and intentional way.
Rather than attempting to control disruption, this session invites participants to rethink how we respond to it—individually and collectively—to create the conditions for more regenerative ways of thinking, acting, and working together!
Many thanks!
Nadia
Léo Gléonec
Hello to all fellow members of the Early Career Hub !
My name is Léo Gléonec, I am an “Elève Normalien” and passionate about environmental geography, with a strong focus on remote sensing. I’ve recently joined SocSES and am eager to connect with researchers and institutions working in this field.
I’m currently seeking a research internship opportunity within a university or research institution, where I could contribute to projects related to social-ecological systems, remote sensing, or environmental monitoring. My motivation is driven by a desire to deepen my skills and collaborate on meaningful research.
If you or someone in your network is looking for an intern—or if you have advice on how to find such opportunities—I’d be delighted to share more about my background and discuss potential collaborations. Feel free to reach out at leo.gleonec@ens-rennes.fr.
Thank you for your time and support!
Best regards,
Léo Gléonec

Welcome, Léo!
Do you have a particular geography/place you are hoping to intern? Just thinking it might be helpful to know where you’re looking. I hope the internship search is going well!
Best,
Jackie

Thank you very much for the warm welcome Jacqueline !
Apologies for not heving seen your message earlier, there are no notifications for these…
I would preferably like to keep the internship on the european continent, as traveling by plane is an impossibility for me. Apart from this, I am really open ! I have already sent emails to researchers from different universities, but I am still in the mist for now… I was told not to worry by my supervisors in Rennes, but time is ticking, and I would be more than relieved if I had a confirmation.
Thank you for the good wishes !!
Thank you for your reply,
have a nice day,
Léo

Thank you Ro for sharing.
Also, big thank you for everyone who showed up yesterday for our EC Hub Hangout. It was so nice seeing everyone – what a wonderful energy 🙂
Some cool ideas already emerged from that space, so keep your ears and eyes open for some news.
For now, have a wonderful week and chat soon.

Hi fellow SocSES ECPs,
I’d like to share a paper I just read around building community, recently published by Katie Moon. I thought people in this group might find interesting and potentially useful.
https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/pan3.70168
It resonated for me around ideas of the fluidity of ‘community’ and how we can hold relation in webs which are messy, contested and un-complete. This paper challenges my notions of community and leads me to reflect on my motive for joining SocSES, in trying to find a community of academics that feels like ‘my people’ – perhaps this quest is the wrong quest? It is impossible to find a group of people with whom we completely agree, and we shouldn’t always see the world the same way – without divergence, there is no richness, no knowledge to be created together – that’s what makes relations rich, interesting, thought-provoking etc. But at the same time, we seek a community to feel safe, accepted, valued etc. I guess it’s a balance for us all to navigate, especially in the early-mid stages of our careers. What this paper brings for me is a sense that the seemingly random mishmash of people with whom I relate, from all different parts of my personal-professional-academic life, who come and go through time and place, is my ‘community’, and I look forward to building relation with lots of like-minded (and un-like-minded ;P) ECPs, through SocSES!
With warmth,
Ro
