Welcome to the Society for Social-Ecological Systems (SocSES)

We are a new society who aim to bring together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to address the complex challenges facing our planet. SocSES wants to promote understanding, collaboration, and training in social-ecological systems research to foster a sustainable future, influence policy, and drive practical solutions.

Objectives:
The Society’s objectives include advancing the understanding of complex social-ecological systems dynamics, providing a collaborative community for global researchers and practitioners, supporting the development of next-generation sustainability leaders, advocating for trans- and interdisciplinary research funding, and leveraging research for policy impact.

Core Values:
Our core values emphasize embracing diverse knowledge frameworks and methodological approaches, particularly those from the Global South, while maintaining a coherent identity across different work areas.

The society values innovative knowledge co-production and dissemination methods, promotes inclusive learning spaces beyond traditional education, and champions environmentally sustainable networking practices that address existing inequities in academic opportunities.

The Launch:
The launch of the new Society is being co-led by the Program on Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS) and the Resilience Alliance, along with other partners. Read more about us here. Kick-starting a 2-3 year transition phase during which the society will be co-developed with our community, we will launch in March 2025 with an initial set of thematic streams, collaborative opportunities and task forces.
